Main Objective:   To gain a better understanding of how the rural population manage their livelihoods and to identify priority problems, potential solutions and arenas of conflict over water resources. Finally, to determine the most suitable strategies through which arbitration can be enhanced.
Brief Description: This three year long longitudinal research project developed an in-depth understanding on how the rural population of central Bangladesh manages water resources as well as their livelihoods. Different research techniques were used for the purpose. It identified priority problems, potential solutions, and areas of conflict over water resources and then determined the most suitable strategies through which arbitration can be enhanced and which can be linked into the national planning framework for developing and implementing a water strategy.
Output Three literature review reports were prepared on indigenous knowledge in agriculture, socio-economic aspects and understanding water resources. This longitudinal research provided rich data over controlling of water resources, livelihoods and floodplain environment. Outputs of the research were disseminated to policy makers responsible to devise the national water strategy.
